Meet Maurizio, a Psychology graduate from Milan with a passion for photography, design and visual effects. After completing a Diploma in Digital Design in Wellington, Maurizio was absolutely certain he wanted his future to be embedded in the world of filmmaking and compositing and so enrolled in Wellington ICT Graduate School and Victoria University’s Master of Design Technology programme.
Q. What drew you to studying a Master of Design Technology (MDT)?
“I have a deep interest in visual effects. As soon as I came in contact with the visual effects world a couple of years back I understood it was the right path for me. Now I’m not only passionate, but I crave knowledge around this fascinating world. This programme was the best opportunity on the market for helping me achieve my goal, not only in New Zealand but I think also in the rest of the world. Wellington is also a great place to live and study; a vibrant city which has always something to offer, full of culture, initiatives, events and the people are energetic and passionate.”
Q. What have you enjoyed most about the MDT programme so far?
“I’ve enjoyed being in contact with tutors and mentors coming from key positions in the industry. These people have a huge understanding and an immense experience in VFX. The programme has so far lived far beyond my expectations!”
Q. You must be excited with the opening of the new MDT campus, the Miramar Creative Centre?
“Having the opportunity to study in this facility in the heart of Wellington’s VFX industry is amazing! We have top-of-the-range equipment and technology for our projects, like a green screen studio and professional filming cameras.”
Q. What are some opportunities Wellington ICT Graduate School has offered you?
“Having the opportunity to participate in seminars and lectures not strictly related to my field of study has helped me to grow and widen my interests and knowledge. It is also thanks to this programme and in particular to the incredible teaching capabilities of my compositing tutor, Areito Echevarria, I was able to obtain a job at Park Road Post as a VFX artist.”
Q. So you’re already living the dream, Maurizio!
“My biggest aspiration, which drives me every day during the long hours of work, is to become a senior compositor in an important company like Weta Digital and maybe afterwards also as a VFX supervisor. I’m widening my knowledge around VFX here every day. I hope I can continue to have a solid participation and contribution to the incredible world of film and animation.”
Tell us more about your Sola project, as part of the Compositing and Motion Graphics course?
“Sola was the project I created for our Compositing final 3 week assignment. The aim was to create a trailer for an imagined movie. We had to include at least 6 VFX shots, such as set extension, green screen, image based lighting CG renders, 3D camera tracking and stock elements. Right from the start I wanted to use the skills I had learned to create something that looked as real and believable as possible. I had a lot of fun inventing, creating, filming, modelling and putting together all the different pieces to make them belong to each other. I’m really pleased with the final result.”
